Washer Won’t Drain? Here’s What to Check Before You Call a Technician

A washer full of standing water is one of the most common calls we get. Before you schedule a technician, these three checks take about ten minutes and solve the issue more often than you’d expect.
1. Check the drain hose for kinks or clogs
Pull the washer out slightly and look at the drain hose running to the standpipe or utility sink. A kinked hose, or one that’s been pushed too far into the drain (creating a siphon), is a very common and completely free fix.
2. Clear the coin trap or drain filter
Most front-load washers and many top-loaders have an accessible drain filter — check your manual for its location. Coins, buttons, and small socks are the usual culprits, and clearing this filter is genuinely a five-minute job.
3. Confirm the lid or door switch is engaging
Modern washers won’t complete a drain or spin cycle if the lid switch (top-load) or door latch (front-load) isn’t detecting a closed and locked position. Make sure nothing is preventing a full, firm close.
When it’s time to call a technician
If you’ve checked all three and the washer still won’t drain, the issue is likely one of these, all of which need a technician:
- Failed drain pump — the most common cause once hose and filter are ruled out
- Faulty lid/door switch — can fail electrically even if it closes properly
- Control board issue — less common, but possible on units with prior electrical problems

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a standing-water washer dangerous to leave overnight?
It’s not typically dangerous, but standing water can develop odor and mold if left more than a day or two — worth prioritizing a same-day call if possible.
Will a drain pump replacement fix error codes too?
It depends on the code — a technician can confirm during diagnosis whether the pump alone resolves it or whether the control board is also involved.
