Before you call

Three checks that solve a lot of ice maker calls

Some “broken” ice makers just need a reset or a new filter. Try these first, and if nothing changes within 24 hours, book a technician.

  • Check the shut-off arm or switch. If the wire arm is raised or the switch is off, the ice maker stops making ice.
  • Replace an old water filter. A clogged filter (most are rated for about six months) slows water to the ice maker and causes small or hollow cubes.
  • Check the freezer temperature. Ice makers need the freezer at about 0°F. If the freezer is running warm, the real problem is cooling. See our freezer repair page.

Typical Cost

Ice maker repair

$150–$350

Typical parts and labor. Water inlet valves and ice maker assemblies sit in the middle of the range, and sealed in-door compartments that need defrosting run higher. Written quote before any work.

Ice maker problems we fix

We trace the fault to the part, whether it’s water supply, the ice maker itself or the freezer.

Not making any ice

A failed water inlet valve, frozen fill tube or bad ice maker module. We test water flow and the module before replacing parts.

Small, hollow or cloudy cubes

Usually low water pressure, a clogged filter or a partially frozen fill tube, which starves the mold of water.

Ice frozen into a block

Ice melts and refreezes in the bin when the door seal leaks or the auger sits unused. In-door ice compartments can ice over on some French-door models.

Leaking water

A cracked fill cup, loose supply line or overfilling inlet valve. Leaks under the fridge can damage floors fast. See our guide on refrigerator leaks.

Dispenser jams or won’t dispense

A seized auger motor, broken dispenser door flap or ice clumped around the auger.

Undercounter ice machine issues

Scale buildup, failed water pumps and sensors on residential undercounter ice machines. Hard water makes descaling important.

Ice maker repair FAQs

Why is my ice maker not making ice but the fridge is cold?

The most common causes are a raised shut-off arm, a clogged water filter, a frozen fill tube or a failed water inlet valve. If those check out, the ice maker module itself may have failed.

Why does my French-door refrigerator ice maker keep freezing up?

Ice makers mounted in the fresh-food door can ice over when the compartment seal leaks or the defrost and fan system isn’t clearing moisture. It’s a known weak point on several brands. A technician can repair the seal, fan or heater instead of just thawing it out.

How long does an ice maker repair take?

Most are finished in one visit of about an hour. Some model-specific ice maker assemblies need to be ordered, and that adds a return trip.

Is it worth fixing the ice maker or should I replace the refrigerator?

An ice maker repair costs a fraction of a new refrigerator. If the refrigerator still cools well, repairing the ice maker almost always makes sense.

Do you repair standalone undercounter ice machines?

Yes, we service residential undercounter ice machines, including descaling, water pumps and sensors.
