Microwaves worth repairing, and ones that aren’t
A $120 countertop microwave is rarely worth a service call, and we’ll tell you that on the phone. Installed microwaves are a different story. An over-the-range unit is also your range hood, vent fan and cooktop light, and a built-in or drawer model is sized to a cabinet opening. Replacing one means matching the mounting plate or trim kit, plus the labor to hang it, so a repair usually costs far less.
Microwaves store a dangerous charge in the high-voltage capacitor even when unplugged. That’s why we don’t recommend DIY repairs inside the cabinet. A technician discharges and tests the high-voltage circuit safely before replacing anything.
Types we repair
Installed microwave repair
$150–$300
Typical parts and labor for over-the-range and built-in models. Magnetron and control-board jobs land at the top of the range. You get a written quote before we start.
Microwave problems we fix
Most installed-microwave failures come down to a short list of parts.
Runs but doesn’t heat
The most common call. Usually a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or a door switch that’s not closing the circuit.
Sparking or arcing inside
Often a burned waveguide cover (the small panel inside the cavity) or chipped interior paint. Stop using it until it’s checked.
Dead display or no power
A blown internal fuse, usually caused by a failing door switch. Replacing the fuse alone just blows it again, so we test the switches too.
Turntable won’t spin
Worn turntable motor, coupler or roller ring. A quick, inexpensive fix on most models.
Keypad not responding
Membrane keypad or control board failure, which is common after steam and grease exposure above a range.
Vent fan or light out
On over-the-range units the exhaust fan, light sockets and thermal sensor are separate parts we can replace.

Microwave repair FAQs
Is it worth repairing an over-the-range microwave?
Usually, yes. Replacing one means buying a unit that fits your mounting plate and cabinet, then paying for installation. If the repair quote is more than about half the cost of a new installed unit, or the microwave is over 9 or 10 years old, we’ll tell you replacement is likely the better value.
Can I replace the microwave fuse myself?
We don’t recommend it. A blown fuse is usually a symptom of a failed door switch, and the high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even when the microwave is unplugged.
Do you repair countertop microwaves?
We will if you’d like, but for most countertop models the service call costs about as much as a new microwave, so we’ll be upfront about that before booking.
Why does my microwave run but not heat?
The usual causes are a failed magnetron, a bad high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a faulty door interlock switch. A technician tests each part to find the one that failed.
Do you repair microwave drawers and built-in units?
Yes. We service built-in wall microwaves, microwave drawers and microwave-wall oven combination units from the major brands.
